Menu Swap: August 4th

Mint is an herb which, from memory, I know I don’t take to all that well. Then again, I know my taste buds have changed drastically over the years so I’m willing to give it a second try. I know tarragon has a mint-like taste and I often try to find uses for it. Thai Basil and I had a love hate relationship the first time around so, dearest mint, I shall see if I can tolerate your taste this time. In fact, mint is an ingredient in one type of cuisine that I now favor - Iran/Persian. A while back when I went recipe browsing, I came across Loobia Polow which is a Persian green bean stew. The ingredients were simple and easy to locate save for one - dried lime. What the heck was a dried lime? I didn’t know you could dry limes. Then again, what can’t you dry?

Some time later, I found dried limes. Where? Where else! My Asian market at a bargain. Two for .99 cents, which is less than .50 cents per lime. To me, that seemed astonishingly reasonable considering that dried fruit is not cheap by any means. So, I got my limes. Holy Moley - they are fantastic. The taste resembles tamarind more than a lime or perhaps a dried cranberry, unsweetened. The last time I visited my Asian market, I overloaded myself with dried limes and now am going crazy in using at least once per week. This week, as mint is the ingredient chosen by Natalie, I’m going to exploit some recipes from Persia.

Cooking aside everything has simmered down for the mean while and since I now live alone, I have more time to make fancy smancy meals again when my health doesn’t get in the way. It, however, shouldn’t; I’ve been just ill lately due to the fact of eating out a lot in the past week. I’m certain everyone knows how that goes. The people in Philadelphia are very careless and think that even the smallest trace of gluten won’t harm me - of course I know better.

Thanks Cheryl.

I just have to take this week to restuff myself with good clean food. It's so funny that even though I missed eating out, I prefer to eat home. Not for the lack of cross-contamination but just..my food tastes better.

I hope you enjoy your week too and thank you for your former condolences on the passing of my grandmother. I need to dedicate a baked good to everyone for their concerns.

I am so sorry about the passing of your grandmother and all that has been going on with your life recently. Hopefully you can now take some time to rest and regroup this upcoming week.

Your menu, as always, looks amazing. I love how there is always a flavor/style theme. It keeps it so fun! Thanks for sharing!

First, congrats on #100! I just got there too!

The Persian food sounds really interesting. I always like trying different things, although I never tend to cook them. I tend to stay fairly Mediteranean. I'll have to explore my Asian market a little more carefully. I head there every so often for that sticky rice flour, if nothing else.

Asparagus Thin Focus

Those who suffer with food allergies do not have to surrender to good nutrition, good health, and most importantly, good flavor. My goal is to bring to the public wholesome information in addition to recipes for those who need hope and help in the kitchen.

I may be thin but I'm an enthusiastic cook with a passionate appetite.
